How are wrinkles formed and what can we do about it?
One of the major concerns people have about their aesthetics would be features that give their age away. Years of laughter, anger, joy and pain are etched onto our faces and even without moving a muscle, our faces can mirror our overall disposition, providing cues to our character and emotions.
Imagine the happiest person you know (babies don’t count) and really think about the way his/her face look. They would most likely have crow’s feet at the end of their eyes and their facial muscles would be quick to ease into a smile at the slightest trigger. The development of their muscles over years of having such positive disposition would create deeper crow’s feet that somehow make them look even friendlier and approachable. When you think about smiles that reach the eyes, you will almost always include the crow’s feet in that picture you have in mind.
The lines that will eventually etch your face will depend on several factors including genes and lifestyle. And while wrinkles are not all bad, we might want to delay their appearance naturally by modifying our lifestyles. First let us understand the types of wrinkles that can appear on the face.
4 steps to ward off wrinkles
1. UV protection and repair
Sunscreen of at least SPF 35 or higher is a must even when you think you’re not exposed. Refer to our previous article on the effects of UV on our skin for more information. Even with sunscreen, physical shields are a must too. Especially quality sunglasses that protect our eyes from the rays.
Exposure to UV rays and free radicals that result from air pollution cause oxidative stress to our bodies, which can result in wrinkles.
To help our skin with its repairs, we can consume antioxidant foods and use creams that have vitamin C.
2. Take care of your health
3. Products that can help with wrinkles
Rosehip oil can do so many things for our skin but most importantly, it is an affordable antioxidant and collagen booster for our skin!
Hyaluronic acid boosts our skin’s elasticity and hydration that smooths out fine lines.
Retinoids and vitamin C serums works the best with fine lines, sagging skin and skin imperfections.
Guasha massage, when done correctly, helps to tone your facial muscles, stimulate circulation.
4. Stop habits that can cause wrinkles to form
- Sleeping on your side with your face squashed into the pillow. If you are waking up with sleep marks, that would be a cause for alarm.
- Cupping your face in your hands.
- Rubbing your eyes.
- Squinting or furrowing your brows.
