Why do my pimples keep recurring at the same spot?

Pimples or acne breakouts occurring repeatedly in the same spot can be due to a combination of factors which is why just using a new skincare serum might not solve your problem of recurring breakouts.

  1. Changes in hormones can lead to breakouts usually along the jawline and cheeks. The long term solution to this if it is a serious case would be to get blue light therapy done regularly or cryotherapy to destroy the oil glands but this might be too extreme as oil production is actually good as we age. We recommend keeping to a good skincare regime and keep the skin clean, pH balanced and hydrated (probably with a hydrating toner) throughout the day.

  2. You might have cysts that are huge pimples under the skin that does not come to head (you can’t pop them). The cyst is inflamed as they fill up and grow larger and sometimes painful to touch. Even after the inflammation goes down, the pore sac still remains clogged and therefore can become inflamed again. They never come to head and are often recurring. forcibly popping them might cause scarring and they might still recur as it is not cleaned out properly. they are usually caused by hormone changes as they are so deep in the skin, they are difficult to treat. For painful ones before an event, we recommend getting a shot of cortisol at the dermatologist but this is not a long term solution. Best to seek better lifestyle changes to balance out hormones!

  3. Propionibacterium acnes is THE bacteria as mentioned in our previous articles that causes acne. they can multiply and spread on parts of the skin, colonise a pore and cause repeated inflammation. While there are topical creams to help kill this bacteria, use of these creams might lead to other problems as well such as drying out your skin or redness or sensitivity. this bacteria feeds on sebum so it is good to tackle that source they feed on instead!

  4. During sleep or rest, parts of your skin might experience more friction or pressure from being pressed on pillowcases or when resting your head on your hand. If your pillowcase is not clean, this constant irritation can lead to clogged pores and pimples if inflamed.

  5. If you have tried to pop pimples, sometimes even when the pus has surfaced, there is improper drainage from the follicles. this can then cause a blockage under the skin, making it reoccur. as Acne often develops in hair follicles, If a particular hair follicle is prone to excess oil production or blockage, it can lead to recurrent acne in the same area.

  6. Having a diet high in refined sugars and processed foods, inadequate hygiene, touching your face frequently, can transfer bacteria to your face and lead to recurring pimples in the same areas.

  7. If you consistently use makeup or skincare products that clog pores or irritate the skin, it can lead to acne in the same areas where you apply those products. especially in certain climates where you perspire more and when not removed properly at the end of the day!

  8. Underlying Skin Conditions such as rosacea or folliculitis, can lead to recurrent pimple-like eruptions in specific areas. Getting the right skincare to help with such skin conditions is important in minimising flare ups and inflammation.

Regular exfoliation (gentle physical exfoliation once a week and chemical exfoliation a couple times a week) can help prevent repeated breakouts and clear out the pores. You could try to use a salicylic acid treatment/cleanser of a proper concentration in your skincare routine.
